“I know Curacao and Wannabike is THE place to go for Bike Fun!”

5 of 5 starsReviewed January 30, 2015 on Tripadvisor

I am an an accommodation provider on Curacao and have dealt with Wannabike.com on behalf of my guests for a while now. They provide a great service and are, without a doubt, the best if not the only place to go on Curacao for biking. Great equipment complemented with knowledgeable and friendly service. They know all the best trails and where/how to enjoy the island on a mountain bike. If you are even thinking of getting on a bike on Curacao, check them out first!

“A “must do” bike ride that is challenging, informative and fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2014

The mountain biking trails in this ride were challenging and fun. Frank and Bert were exceptional guides that were passionate about their jobs. We were briefed on historical facts about the island as introduced to the wildlife of Curacao. The flamingoes were our favorite; and this a “must do” for all tourists. Regardless of skill level, they offer trails tailored to all levels!

Did the Jan Thiel tour. I was the only English person in an all Dutch group, but considering they could all speak better English than I could, it presented no problem. The tour is fun and informative, seeing some lovely nature and and historical sites that you would probably never find without a guide. Although I had a hire car I chose to be collected at my hotel as I thought I would never find the meeting point for the tour.
Great service and super friendly staff make this a “must do” tour for all MTB riders.

“Great tour”

We had the Caracasbay and Jan Thiel tour today and it was really good.
The Wannabike guides were very friendly, entertaining and shared a lot of information.
We can highly recommend the Wannabike tour for everyone that likes to be more active than sitting at the pool/beach all day!

“Great way to experience Curacao!”
Reviewed May 25, 2014

We were in Curacao for a few days on a business boondoggle and wanted to get out and spend some time away from the pool and beach.
Ellemeike was quick to respond to my inquiry and put together a tour on the Tuesday afternoon for my wife and I, including transportation from our hotel. Although we brought our own cycling gear (shoes, helmets, Camelbacks, and jerseys) WannaBike was prepared with everything we could have needed.  Guides Frank and Bert did a terrific job taking us through some unique and challenging cycling paths near the Spanish Water and Jan Theil areas. We experienced the salt lagoons, saw Flamingos, and were keen to hear interesting history of the area from Bert and Frank at various stops along the way.
Ellemeike was too kind and went out of her way to organize for us to purchase a WannaBike kit as a souvenir of our trip.
I highly recommend WannaBike if your trip to Curacao should include some adventure. Ask for Bert and Frank and expect a Fun tour!

“Hot & sweaty fun!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2014

Though I felt a little stiff in the shoulders the day after the ride I absolutely loved it – even the wayward mud route that Bik (?) took me on – lol! Will definitely recommend your company to friends who come to visit Curacao – and next time I’ll make sure I bring my cycling gear with me! The pace was perfect considering the heat and the local info relayed along the way was interesting. I felt like I got to know Caracas Bay in a totally different way than when I did the Curacao Island Bus tour.
Considering I was the only girl with 4 guys I appreciated that there were no derogatory “girl slowing us down” remarks and if anything felt supported and encouraged.  My only criticism would be that the water bottles be fresh, new bottles for each guest ie. bottled water. The “nurse” in me was put off by the recycled cycling water bottles that have been used by who knows how many other people and I couldn’t help wondering how sanitized they were. Additionally, customer service would be improved by having extra cycling gloves and perhaps small backpacks to use during the ride for those guests that did not have the foresight to book ahead of time and bring their cycling gear with them.

“Great biking with Bert and Frank” Reviewed April 1, 2014
Our family did the the late day bike ride in Jan Thiel Beach area today with a 15 year old in our family. I am not a biker, it was a challenge but not bad. Lots of wonderful scenery, salt dikes, flamingoes, beach, history and fun. They are set up for both faster paced folks and slower ones like me. It is really a couple hours of biking but with plenty of breaks and photo ops. Ride is about 14km. Highly recommend WannaBike if you want something different… And unique!!

“We spent a very enjoyable evening on our bike tour, they picked us up at our hotel at 3:45 and we were back just before dark. There were a few kilometres on a residential street but the rest was off road biking. The biking was exhilarating and the guides were very knowledgable. They gave us a brief history of the island and some great photo opportunities.”

“Oddly enough, my beach holiday turned out to be a great riding destination as well. I was very surprised, as well as impressed, with the riding community in Curacao. Had you have asked me a month ago about a riding trip to Curacao I would have thought you were mad. I have been lucky to have had the opportunity to travel and ride in many places, most of which pride and market themselves on their riding. While the trails I rode in Curacao were not the most challenging they were right up there with the most scenic and certainly more unique than I have ridden other places. Factor in a variety of activities for the rest of the family, Curacao was a hit all around. Would I go back to ride? Certainly! Especially because I know that the weather will be hot (even in the dead of Canadian Winters), the beer will be cold and the riding community will be welcoming.”

“Nice MTB tour at Curacao”
Reviewed December 31, 2013
We had a nice trip with Arthur at Caracasbay peninsula and around the Jan Thiel Lagoon (hosted a 2006 MTB World Cup). The pace was moderate but well adapted to the group and the temperatures. Scenery was great and a lot of information about the area and its history.

Bikes were in so so state, not brilliant but maybe I’m a bit spoiled with the gear at home. The guide took plenty of water so that was well catered. Curacao is a great (and unexpected) island for mountainbiking!

With my wife we did a fantastic intermediate mountain bike tour around Caracasbaai with WannaBike. We could visit never saw locations on Curaçao and learned some historical facts of the Island. I decided to book an advanced tour. Ellemieke van Beek proposed me to follow training with the local Mountain Bike Club Belissima. What a great experience!
Thanks to WannaBike, Belissima and Ellemieke!!!

Me and my wife visited curacao as a part of Carribean cruise. We took a cycling tour. The tour was exxcellent with a lot cross country trails and a beautiful nature. There was also a familly on the samee tour so the tour guides split us in two groups appropriate to our phisical condition. So we have a lot of fun, a lot of nature and a challenging tour. It was prefect. The guides could speak english fluently. They also arranged all the bike equipment, drinks and transport.

WannaBike – Whataway to have fun & Explore, May 2013

SOSF:

Just came back from Curacao and I must say our time with Arthur, the new guide at WB was fantastic. We hadn’t ridden our bikes back home in SF for a year, so we were not sure how we would do – especially since we’re typically City Riders. Arthur quickly assessed our skill level and kicked it up a notch. Got to see a few flamingos grazing at the Curacao Salt Flats, learned some history of island life and tour a slavery holding area for incoming ill slaves from old times. The company really takes great care of you.

Great Ride, May 2013

Valor759:

Wannabike was fantastic with local trail knowledge, and teaching mountain bike technique. The bikes were excellent quality and well-maintained. Even though the group had varied experience, everyone was able to get a good workout & a great time was had by all! Our guide was very informative about Curacao’s unique environmental features–highly recommend.

Very fun excursion, April 2013

Joe G.:

We joined a ride and were paired with riders slightly ahead of us in abilities. This pushed us to work harder and improve our skills. The other riders were fun and interesting. The ride and equipment were excellent. The guide was outstanding. She even helped us change a flat tire! It was harder work than we expected but we enjoy being active and left the ride as better riders. It was a great adventure and one of the highlights of our trip to Curacao. We will definitely do this again on our next trip.

Great bike ride, March 2013

Burghto V.:

We booked with them on very short notice. I sent a reservation request in the evening at 9pm and they wrote right back saying they had a trip going in the morning. We were able to join otherwise we would have missed going with them at all.

It was a good ride for various abilities but did have a few more technical parts. The guide was great and everyone could go at their own pace.

Very Happy to have booked with WannaBike, January 2013

Linda S.:

We always book some biking tour with a company outside of the cruise offerings to get the best experience we can. Wanna Bike went out of their way to make this happen after we found out Berry had waited 45 minutes for us and believed we were a no show. They tried to contact me by phone but being out of the country the call did not go through. Carnival did not inform the passengers that there was an hour difference from ship time to local time. We arrived at the meeting place and thought we were 10 minutes early, but after 20 minutes checked with the information booth at the welcome center in port. It was then we found out about the time difference. I called them and asked if it was still possible to do the ride. Ellemiek (?) the owner of the company left a meeting and came and got us. That is real customer service!! We then did our ride with Berry, who was very friendly and fun. The ride was challenging in a few areas but we were not looking for boring and easy. All 5 of us were tired but had a great time. I would definitely book with them again. (January 9, 2013 ride)

Interesting experience, January 2013

Wendy M.:

My college age son and I joined Berry for a tour. He was an excellent guide and made every effort to make sure the group had a nice time. Neither of us had done mountain biking before. We are both road bikers. At 60, I was considerably older than the group. Half way through the tour, I decided I did not particularly like mountain biking. I was able to switch to the road while the rest of the group enjoyed the mountain bike paths. We had a wonderful time. I would recommend giving it a try, especially if the route has a road alternative.

Biking off the beaten path – see Curaçao as it should be seen, december 2012

I knew before visiting Curaçao that I wanted at least one cycling adventure. Berry took three of us on a two and a half hour beginner/intermediate excusrion around Caracasbaai and Spaanse Water. Berry was a friendly and fit guide. You get off the beaten track into the brush to get easily between sites. I enjoyed every minute, even though I’m in my early 60s and have never mountain biked. There was only one place where I had to walk up a little ways because of a steep rise after a sharp turn. Go ahead, have an adventure.

Get off the beaten path, november 2012

Excellent adventure tour without going over the top.

Vera was a great guide and fun bike rider. Worked well with the variety of riders in our group. Charged quickly ahead when appropriate so we could have fun chasing her, and kept the ones in the rear in mind without coddling them.

Biking exposes you to the more sights and nature that you can’t get to see any other way. Jumping off the bikes to explore forts and cliffs made the ride that much more interesting.
Ask her to show you Hell’s Hill (I think that was the name). Challenging bit of technical uphill to conquer.

The bikes were in decent shape, but don’t expect a luxury ride here. Vera plans ahead with frozen water bottles for the ride and is quick to change a flat or pump a low tube up.

Would definitely go on this tour again, and would even be up for a longer ride next time.

Jeffrey W.:

Early morning mountainbiking experience: Saw the brochure in my resort package at Livingstone. Decided to check it out. The staff was very friendly, provided Frozen water bottles for us to take along. Nice trip! Lots of water views. A few challenging hills to climb and lots of stops to explain the area. Tour started at 8 AM and ended at 11. It was a nice way to start the day. Would definitely do it again !

Mountainbike tour with Wannabike, April 2012

Randal P.:

Excellent Activity for active people: We arrived on the Holland America Zuiderdam on April 24, 2012 and always enjoy going out on our own away from the cruise line excursions. I had communicated with WannaBike via eMail and had arranged a ride for me and my wife. We were met promptly at the port by Barry and the whole experience was exactly what we wanted. Barry made sure we were both fitted properly and he worked with us to make sure we had a ride that matched our abilities. We were able to go places and see things that most would not see. It was very personal and was like going for a bike ride with your best friend. I would recommend this activity to anybody who can ride on packed trails and wants some exercise.

Fun way to get out and see Curacao: I picked this because of the other reviews, and was not disappointed. Pickup was prompt and by one of the guides (Leo). The trip was well planned and a lot of fun. We were with another couple who had no experience, so the ride was easy and Ellemeike and Leo showed us some sights. Then we went on a real mountain bike trail! My wife fell down, but she got right back up and we had a great time. Definitely would do again!

Janique Simard:

We had such a fantastic time!!!!!  I am so happy everything worked out, and so relieved we went with a guided tour, as we would NEVER have found those trails on our own.  Nils was absolutely wonderful, and gave a fascinating and informative tour – the whole family had a great time!  We were a little nervous and wondered if we had over-estimated our biking abilities, as we were exhausted even before the tour on Friday.  But we hung on, and Nils catered the course to our abilities – we exerted ourselves, but not so much that we couldn’t function; it was just the right amount of challenge.  We learned a lot about your beautiful island, took many beautiful pictures, and had an overall extremely positive experience!
So in summary, a wonderful tour!  So happy we did this!  And give Nils a great big pat on the back for us, he was wonderful!

“We had a fun time on our bike tour! It was a great way to see parts of the island that you just can’t see any other way. Hiking is too slow and you can’t get there with a car.Mick did a great job touring us around, pointing out the sites and giving us the history. Mick knew we wanted a workout as well so she kept the pace fast. Highly recommended tour!”

“For something different and new, mountain biking was a great way to see the backside of Curacao, as well as explore places that are off the tourist beaten path!  Great for cruise ship passengers as well, as they picked us up right at the port!  WannaBike was outstanding in service, the price was right, and most importantly the day was fun fun fun!!!”

Mountain bike week on Curacao, November 2010
Marco Grosze-Holz: (from his journal for the website of Dust’n Mud)
Fri. November 5 at 7.30. Helene from Wannabike is waiting for us for our trip through Koraal Tabak. Helene knows the routes and paths are (fortunately) quite dry and hard. The advantage of riding with a guide is that they know the nice places. We arrive at a cave with bats, get to see beautiful scenery, underwater cave to the sea, historic mansion, etc. We have a drink at an “Toko” and lunch at the Ostrich Farm.  In the “Chichi” souvenir shop we do some shopping and we drive on the Aloe plantations.  This was our last ride. 4 days in total we cycled 186 km altitude and 2498 bridged ….

Rolf van Lin:
“WannaBike  takes you on mountain bike tours to many places in Curacao. You go to places you normally never come. Train with a local club, evaluate a Caribbean beer and a Dutch croquette at sunset are some of the relaxing efforts that have surprised me with WannaBike. Sports Stingy? Ask about the many possibilities. “Ayo!
Paul Coolegem
:
“For me it was my first mountain bike experience, I am a road biker.  The routes were doable for a novice mountain biker, although you still need good basic condition.  I had to  pause occasionally for a technical descent on slippery stone coral. You get to places you would never discover alone. The guidance was excellent. You do not need to bring your own bike. Everything is incluided and well arranged.”

John van Rens:
“Cycling on Curacao is a very special experience. Apart from the amazing natural beauty (cacti 4 meters high, picas and 10-thousand lizards, tropical birds, iguanas, etc) you cycle through a slightly hilly area. The tropical temperatures make it a major event. Direct contact with local people makes it all very special. Without doubt an event to remember. “

“In advance, I was quite nervous to go with the tour . I’m not a superhero on the bike and my fitness is not great.   They take your level into accountand even someone who hardly ever ride can manage. It is your own to decide how hard you ride, so how hard and difficult it becomes. ….. I would say: Come out off the deckchair, book a tour, get on the bike and go enjoy. Oh, almost forgot: it’s a good price! Especially compared to other tours. “

“WannaBike and Curacao surprised us very much. Great mountain bike tourguides take small groups to beautiful, and sometimes technical challenging trails. This gives a total different impression of the island, and is something every mountain biker should experience. Besides this mountain biking experience, WannaBike recommends on all must see’s en do’s on the island!”
